Joan Fontaine is wonderfully cast as Jane who is depicted as both plain and mousy in the novel but with some kind of spiritual, inner beauty. His inner turmoil over his growing love for Jane is evident on his face from the moment he meets her on the moors. Orson Welles is appropriately alternately brooding, foreboding and romantic. I rate this movie 4 stars for the cast and for a script generally true to the original Bro nte novel without the usual Hollywood embellishments. There love has a complication due to a secret Rochester has kept for decades. This prepares her for her stay at Thornfield as a governess fated to fall in love with the brooding master of the house, Edward Rochester (played by Orson Welles). There she learns the meaning of love in the form of the short-lived Helen (played winningly by an uncredited Elizabeth Taylor).

She is rejected by her one living relative, her cruel Aunt Reed, and exiled to a girl's school intended to break young girl's spirits and instill true Christian virtue. In brief, this is the story of a young girl (Peggy Ann Garner as a child Joan Fontaine as an adult) whose parents have died and who has apparently no living family.
